KLAMP Gallery Cheongdam is pleased to present 'Flower Shower', a solo exhibition of Ava. The title of the exhibition, 'Flower Meteor', implicitly refers to Ava's new works, in which she sees each individual as a single flower, and captures the moments when flower meteors fly and meet and intertwine with each other, just like meteors falling on the planet. On the other hand, the gazes of the characters in the work, who stare at us in the midst of the myriad shooting stars like rain, are meant to convey a fleeting moment that is difficult to express in words, and are also a gaze of healing and comfort from the artist to the viewer. Ava, <You make me blind>, oil on linen canvas, 73x60.6cm, 2023 Ava의 이번 신작 속 주를 이루는 꽃에 대해, 작가는 아래와 같은 감상을 남긴다.'사실 꽃이 좀 무섭고 징그럽다. 가까이서 보면 핏줄 같은 잎맥이나 털, 점박이 같은 것들이 징그럽게 느껴진다. 어쩔 땐 이게 예쁜가 싶다가 가만히 보고 있자면 너무나도 사랑스럽다. 징그럽지만 사랑스러운 존재. 살아서 숨쉰다는 건 그런 것 아닐까?'- 작가노트 中On the subject of flowers, which are the main focus of Ava's new works, the artist shares the following sentiments."Flowers are actually kind of scary and gross. When you look at them up close, the blood-like veins, hairs, spots, and other things are gross. Sometimes I think it's pretty, but then I look at it and realize how lovely it is. Disgusting and lovely at the same time. Isn't that what it means to be alive and breathing?”- Artist's statement Ava, <가시 돋친 아이>, 117x91cm, oil on linen canvas, 2023 Ava, <꽃유성>, 145.5x112cm, oil on linen canvas, 2023 이에서도 알 수 있듯, 작가에게 꽃은 마냥 아름답기만 한 대상이 아닌 역설적, 다중적인 속성을 지닌 것이다. 그리고 이러한 감상을 '살아숨쉰다는 것', 그러니까 생(生)의 이치와도 연결시키며 저마다의 삶이 지닌 가치로 확장시킨다. 한편으로는, 언젠간 시들기 마련이기에 더욱 그 유한한 아름다움이 값지게 느껴지는 점 역시 꽃과 생의 연결고리일 것이다. 이는 이번 전시의 대표작 <꽃유성>에서처럼 꽃의 암술이 작품 속 인물의 눈처럼 빛나듯 묘사된 점에서, 꽃과 인간의 공통분모를 더욱 뚜렷하게 드러낸다. 또, <가시 돋친 아이>에서 가시가 돋친 채 표현된 인물은 스스로를 지키기 위해 가시를 뻗치고도 서로를 향한 시선을 거두지 않는 강인함을 보여준다. 이는 프리다 칼로의 <가시목걸이를 한 자화상>(1940)에서 칼로가 가시를 목에 두른 자신의 모습으로 그린 점 역시 연상된다. 이 관점에서, Ava는 스스로의 고통과 치유의 과정을 화폭에 담은 것이다.As you can see here, for the artist, flowers are not just beautiful objects, but have paradoxical and multifaceted properties. She also connects this appreciation to the idea of 'living and breathing', the essence of life, and extends it to the value of each life. On the other hand, the connection between flowers and life is that they will eventually wither, making their finite beauty all the more valuable. The common thing between flowers and humans is further revealed in the representative work of this exhibition, <Flower meteor>, in which the pistils of the flowers are depicted as shining like the eyes of the figures in the work. In addition, in <Child with Thorns>, the figures depicted with thorns show her strength through not withdrawing their gaze towards each other even though they extend their thorns to protect themselves. This is also reminiscent of Frida Kahlo's <Self-Portrait with a Necklace of Thorns> (1940), in which Kahlo depicts herself with thorns around her neck. From this view, Ava's pain and healing process is captured on canvas. Ava, <Kiss>, oil on linen canvas, 73x73cm, 2023 한편, 흔히 우리가 '별똥별'로 잘 알고있는 유성은 긴 꼬리의 흔적을 남기는데, 이는 꽃유성 및 저마다의 생과 연결짓자면 '살아온 궤적' 혹은 '추억'으로 이해된다. 유성은 크기가 클수록 밝고, 오래 보인다고 알려져있는데 이 역시 각자의 삶에 깊이 각인된, 소중한 기억일수록 크고, 선명하게 마음에 남는다는 점과 연결된다. 이러한 꽃유성이 어느 행성에 떨어지면서 빛을 발할 때의 모습은 살면서 맺는 여러 관계들의 흔적일 것이다.By the way, meteors, which we are familiar with as shooting stars, leave a trail of long tails, and this can be understood as "trajectories of life" or "memories" in relation to shooting stars and our own lives. It is said that the larger the meteor, the brighter and longer it is visible, which is also connected to the fact that the more precious memories that are deeply imprinted in our lives, the larger and clearer they remain in our minds.
